Sixth Form Pastoral Care and wellbeing

A student's two years in the Sixth Form represent a significant milestone as they transition from a teenager to a young adult, ready to make their mark on the world. This transition is both exciting and challenging and our staff have a wealth of experience to provide bespoke support to all our students. Our holistic and personalised approach to pastoral care and wellbeing, empowers our students and provides them with the resources, support and opportunities they need to thrive during this important phase of their life.

Knowing and supporting our students as individuals is at the very heart of Pocklington Sixth Form

We are committed to providing a strong support system for our students. Our Sixth Form pastoral care is comprehensive featuring a dedicated team of tutors, housemasters and housemistresses, boarding houseparents, our Health and Wellbeing Service and the head of Sixth Form. We prioritise understanding each student as an individual and tailor our support to their specific needs.

Our House System

Every Sixth Form student belongs to one of the four day houses within the School. In each house, there are four tutors, who are the initial contact for both pastoral care and academic guidance. Among these tutors, one assumes the role of housemaster or housemistress. The tutor groups are intentionally kept small, with typically 10–12 students each. This ensures that a high level of personalised support and advice is available to help students overcome academic challenges, manage stress effectively and make well-informed choices about their futures. Whether through interventions such as individual counselling sessions or group workshops, our goal is to foster a nurturing environment where each student feels valued and supported.

We recognise that achieving a balance between academic commitments and personal wellbeing is crucial for success in Sixth Form and future endeavours

Our dedicated Health and Wellbeing Service is led by the head of student wellbeing, who also serves as the designated safeguarding lead. This in-house team includes school nurses, clinical psychologists, trained counsellors, a chaplain, and staff qualified in mental health first-aid. Together, they enhance the excellent pastoral support provided by the house teams through a triage system, guiding students to appropriate resources, enabling the wellbeing team to deliver a highly personalised service for both students and their families. Students can self-refer, accessing help at a level they feel comfortable with, although referrals by teaching or house staff are also welcome.

At Pocklington Sixth Form, we strive to foster a nurturing and stimulating environment that not only facilitates academic excellence, but also personal growth, preparing students for a seamless transition into adulthood. We encourage open conversations on health and wellbeing with a commitment to extending the highest level of care to our School family.
