Middle School

We are committed to nurturing and empowering pupils both academically and personally with the goal of instilling confidence in pupils to make informed decisions for themselves.

Welcome to Pocklington Middle School - we are in this together

In Middle School, important subject choices are made as pupils set out their academic path for the next few years, laying a strong foundation for further specialised studies at Sixth Form level. Parents of pupils in Year 9 will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about the GCSE Curriculum with individual subject teachers during Parents’ Evening, and attend GCSE option presentations. The careers and university adviser is on-hand to provide specific advice during these information sessions and also begins working with pupils to introduce them to career ideas, encourage them to think about career planning, employability skills and qualities and identify which career path might suit their strengths and interests.

There is no doubt that pupils in Years 9 to 11 undergo a period of rapid change in terms of growth and personal development. This can present challenges for pupils, at a time when they are also faced with the academic demands of sitting their GCSE examinations. Pupils receive support from the pastoral team, which includes housemasters/mistresses and tutors, who work with families to encourage open dialogue. This collaboration is essential in helping our pupils approach their examinations feeling prepared and confident.

Sporting opportunities and our extensive co-curricular programme continue to play a key role in the all-round education we offer our pupils at Pocklington, and also provide downtime from important academic studies. Middle School opens up numerous new co-curricular opportunities, including the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Combined Cadet Force, where pupils can strengthen friendships, make memories, discover more about themselves and prepare for a successful life after school.

This is an exciting time, and although there are important decisions to be made, they also present opportunities that pupils will benefit from for years to come. It is a privilege to lead the Middle School pastoral team and enable each child to achieve their very best.
