The creative voices of Pocklington School’s Second and Third Year pupils are taking centre stage in one of the gallery spaces in the Pocklington Arts Centre this month with the unveiling of a moving and imaginative new exhibition: Self-Portrait Poems.

The exhibition showcases a series of deeply personal poems written and photographed by pupils as part of a school project exploring identity, self-expression and the world as they see it. Each piece pairs a poem with a photograph chosen by the pupil themselves to reflect who they are at this moment in their lives.

These self-portraits, both visual and written, offer a poignant and often thought-provoking window into the minds of young people navigating their sense of self. From joyful observations to quiet introspection, the work is as diverse as the pupils who created it.

Adding a multimedia dimension to the project, Third Year pupils have also recorded themselves reading their poems aloud. Visitors to the exhibition can access these audio renditions via QR codes displayed alongside each piece, offering a unique opportunity to hear the words exactly as the young writers intended them.

“This project has allowed our pupils to reflect deeply on who they are and how they see the world around them,” said English teacher, Mr Allams “The results are both touching and powerful, an honest insight into their thoughts, experiences and identities.”The Self-Portrait Poems exhibition is open to the public at Pocklington Arts Centre, inviting families, friends, and members of the community.
