Celebrating 10 Years of Short-Term Placements at Pocklington School

For over a decade, Pocklington School has proudly welcomed short-term pupils from around the world, offering them a unique opportunity to join our vibrant community for a few terms. Whether they start at the beginning of Michaelmas, Lent or Summer term, pupils quickly become a core part of the Pocklington School 'family'.

From the moment they arrive short-term boarders are immersed in the full boarding school experience. They enjoy all the same opportunities as full-time pupils and are able to gain so much from the school even in a short time.

A short term pupil said of her experience at Pocklington School,

All the people, they are the kindest people I’ve ever met. They make this adventure even better. You don’t feel alone at any moment, they help you, they care about you.”

Short term pupils participate in a huge range of co-curricular activities including music, flying, drama, sport and much more. As well as making friends through their co-curricular pursuits, boarders form close relationships through our carefully curated weekend programme.

Every Saturday boarders participate in an ‘enrichment’ task. From museum visits to martial arts classes, this gives them the opportunity to dive into British culture and develop new skills. On a Sunday pupils participate in fun, adventurous activities which range from cinema trips to theme park visits. This blend of exciting, enriching actives with the free time they have at home means that short term pupils form close relationships with other boarders and are an integral part of the Pocklington School community from their very first day

Another short term pupil at the end of their time at Pocklington said,

I know that my school friends are real, and I hope we don’t lose contact. The boarding house is a like a second home to me, and I feel like we are a true family.”

It’s not uncommon to see siblings, friends and family members of former pupils joining us for a short-term stay, knowing that their time will be memorable. We also have many short term pupils who decide to extend their stay to more terms or even years. These connections strengthen our community and create a welcoming environment for new students. The buddy system we have in place ensures that every international student settles into school life quickly.

Our international students are committed, eager to learn, and often multilingual. They bring diverse perspectives and experiences that enrich our school community. The collaboration between our EAL teachers, boarding staff, and subject teachers ensures that these students receive the support they need to succeed. Regular communication with students' guardians and families further enhances their wellbeing and academic progress.

As we celebrate ten years of short-term placements, we reflect on the countless students who have made Pocklington School a richer place. Their contributions have left a lasting impact, and we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from them. The personal tutors assigned to each international student, in addition to their form tutors, play a crucial role in ensuring their happiness and success.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for all our students. The past decade has shown us the immense value of welcoming short-term boarders, and we are excited to continue this tradition for many years to come.
